Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth empowerment is a critical factor in promoting social and economic development, particularly in urban areas where young people often face challenges such as unemployment, limited educational opportunities, and lack of access to resources. In Katagum Local Government Area, Bauchi State, digital media has emerged as a vital tool for empowering urban youth by providing platforms for skills development, entrepreneurship, and networking. Social media platforms, online learning resources, and digital networking groups help youth access knowledge, connect with mentors, and promote their businesses or initiatives. Research by Usman and Abdullahi (2024) indicates that digital media fosters youth empowerment by enhancing access to information, encouraging self-expression, and facilitating collaboration among young people. This study explores the impact of digital media on urban youth empowerment in Katagum, focusing on its role in education, employment, and community engagement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Urban youth in Katagum face numerous challenges, including high unemployment rates, limited access to quality education, and social exclusion. While digital media offers opportunities for empowerment, many young people struggle to utilize it effectively due to digital illiteracy, limited internet access, and a lack of guidance. This study aims to assess the effects of digital media on urban youth empowerment and identify strategies to enhance its impact.
